24 Statewide assessments show that the percentage of students proficient in reading declines as the students move from elementary and middle school to high school. In May, 2008, the Division for Libraries, Technology and Community Learning launched an initiative to champion high-quality teen services and build momentum behind Wisconsin's drive to create the most literate, well-educated citizenry in the nation. This workshop is part of the initiative. In the morning, Peg Burington will talk about teen literacy and brain development and show how to use the 40 Developmental Assets to create a library plan for serving teens. The goal of the 40 Assets is to help youth become healthy, strong, and productive members of society. In the afternoon, Burington will discuss why gaming is an important part of library services to youth. Included will be an opportunity to try a few of the games. Peg Burington is Director of the Waupaca Area Public Library. Prior to becoming the director she served as the Assistant Director and Young Adult Services Coordinator. She is recognized as a leader in Wisconsin for her progressive approach to young adult services.
