Title Priority Paging Beginning Monday, June 16, 2008 holds can be placed on a title when there are items available. A Priority table will automatically select the library to be paged. Libraries will need to process both Title Paging Lists and Item Paging Lists daily. Please review instructions and a list of frequently asked questions.

GuiCat and MilCat Cataloging The latest changes to the item record location codes raised a lot of questions about the GuiCat and MilCat cataloging programs. I have written an article expaining the two cataloging modules in hopes of quelling some of the mysteries. Please direct any response or comments on the article to Mike Sheehan (phone 715-682-2365 or email msheehan@nwls.lib.wi.us).

Java Warning: Because of conflicts between the Java client that the Windows OS uses and the Java version necessary to adequately run Millennium, please make sure to update only to Java version 1.5 Update 15 for your PC. Please ignore any messages to update beyond the version at this time.

Updating to a Java version beyond 1.5 Update 15 will cause Millennium to display behavior similar to user being unrecognized for certain features in the program. Some settings will not save and some modes will appear grayed out. You may also find that you cannot modify data at all in a given menu.

Once the Merlin software has been upgraded to Release 2007, libraries will be encouraged to go ahead and update to the later versions of Java.

Lake Nebagamon Library will be opening July 16 as a branch of Superior Public Library. Items for the new library are currently being added to the Merlin catalog. Please do not place holds on the items in Merlin. The location code in Merlin will be "ln".

New Loan Rule Table Circulation loan rules will depend on where circulation takes place. The new table will use a standardized schedule for notices and bills.

Release 2007 Merlin Enhancements Software upgrades for Circulation, Cataloging and the online catalog will be scheduled as soon as libraries meet requirements. Requirements and Supported Operating Systems:

1. Processor: An Intel Pentium 4, Pentium D, Xeon, Core or similar processor running at 3 Ghz or faster (2 Ghz or faster for the Core 2 Duo), or an equivalent processor such as the AMD Athlon 64, Opteron 64, or Turion processors with comparable performance.

Millennium applications work on slower processors such as the Pentium 4 2.4 Ghz and faster, but performance will be affected.

2. RAM: At least 1 GB of RAM

If you plan to run other applications on the workstation in addition to Millennium, additional memory is necessary for optimum performance. Newer operating system versions such as Windows Vista require more memory then earlier versions such as Windows XP, so your library should consider additional memory when using newer operating system versions.

3. Disk space: At least 500 MB of free disk space

4. Supported Operating Systems:

Windows:

  • Windows® NT 4.0 (service pack 6a or later)
For Windows NT 4.0, a virtual memory setting of at least 80MB or the size of your PC's RAM, whichever is greater
  • Windows® 2000 (service pack 2 or later),
  • Windows® ME,
  • Windows® XP, or
  • Windows® Vista (Business or Home)

Linux

Mac OS X: version 10.2 or higher
