1 16 28 After a brief refresher, Mike Sauvola will take website project participants beyond the basics of adding content. More advanced features of the Jooma content management system will be introduced, such as working with menus, adding 3rd party extensions and components, gathering website statistics, and online resources for advancing your knowledge of Joomla. After 2:00 Mike will be available to work in the lab with those who would like assistance applying the new techniques covered in the workshop. FEBRUARY
15 16 Participating in Legislative Day is an enjoyable introduction to the practical politics of gaining support for Wisconsin libraries! Inform our legislative representatives about the many ways that school, public, special, and academic libraries serve the people of Wisconsin. Help us build support for library funding and legislation that helps libraries. For more information visit http://www.wla.lib.wi.us/legis/day/index.htm 19 Andrew MacGregor, Clinical Coordinator for Ashland County Community Services at New Horizons North, will provide a general overview of mental illness, discuss currently available treatments, and talk about the principals and practice of the recovery movement in mental health. After a brief presentation, Andrew will answer questions about how to work with mentally ill patrons. Participants are encouraged to think about examples from their work for discussion. 19 In October, 2009 Jim Trojanowski was among 27 libarians to visit libraries in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Pretoria, and other communities in South Africa. Jim will discuss the political, economic, and social climate in the country and how these affect its libraries. 23 MARCH
9, 10 The Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC) will exhibit and discuss the best new books and current trends in literature for youth. CCBC librarians will present 2010 American Library Association award-winners and books in CCBC Choices 2010, the CCBC's latest best-of-the-year list. Cost is $8.00 and lunch is on your own. 18 John DeBacher, Public Library Administration Consultant with DLTCL, will review basic public library budget processes for library directors, as well as suggest approaches for maintaining library operations during times of increasing use and costs, but flat or decreasing revenues. He’ll discuss ways to look at cutting operating fat without depleting service muscle-mass, as well as how to advocate against drastic budget cuts. Finally, he’ll encourage participants to review their operations to look for practices that can be abandoned or operations that can be restructured. 20 23 All Merlin library directors are encouraged to attend this informational meeting about the 2010 Advanced Patron Notification Grant written to automate staff intensive notification delivery processes. The meeting will include the expected changes to be made to the notification mechanisms affecting staff and patrons and will cover the decisions involving librarians that need to be made in order to implement the Teleforms (telephone notification) program. 27 Public library boards, through their authority to approve budgets, set policies, hire and supervise the library director, and many other statutorily delegated powers, play an important role in the success of the library. Jim Trojanowski, Director of Northern Waters Library Service, will discuss what it takes to be a great library trustee. 2 9 The Internet has made it possible for patients and their families to access vast quantities of information that previously would have been difficult for anyone but a physician to access. Health information websites, however, are recognized to differ widely in quality and reliability of their content. The goal of this workshop is to improve participating library staff knowledge of accessing reliable health information on the Internet. Deb Norgdren, Director of the Jim Dan Hill Library, UW-Superior will introduce librarians to appropriate databases, effectively search medical and health databases, provide guidelines for selecting and weeding health information materials and how to request additional health reference assistance. This workshop is required for participation in the Health Information Awareness LSTA grant project. 10 Public library boards, through their authority to approve budgets, set policies, hire and supervise the library director, and many other statutorily delegated powers, play an important role in the success of the library. It's a great time to check out what's new at your library. Sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA), this annual event dates back to 1958 and celebrates the important contributions of libraries and librarians to our society. "Communities Thrive @ Your Library" will be the theme for 2010. For more information and programming ideas visit http://www.ala.org/nlw 15, 16 Linda Stobbe from NWLS will introduce the basics of Microsoft Excel 2007, and help participants become familiar with its functions and capabilities. 22 David Wroblewski will read and discuss from his book The Story of Edgar Sawtelle. The novel, set in northern Wisconsin is about the special relationship between a mute boy and his dog. The New York Times marveled at The Story of Edgar Sawtelle, calling it "a great, big, mesmerizing read." The Chicago Tribune dubbed it "meaty and masterly," and "the best work of fiction ever written about dogs." The WAPL spring conference theme is "Anchoring the Past, Setting Sail for the Future." Sessions will address topics such as fundraising, budgeting, turning your annual report into gold, job center partnerships, and technology. The Learning Center is dedicated to helping people improve skills and find the right job. Selecting Audio and Video for Public Library Collections Building public library media collections is similar in many ways to building print collections, but there are differences as well. This brief workshop will talk about how to select media and good sources for purchasing it. In recognition of the growing popularity of downloadable audio among library patrons, there will also be a review of how to use the OverDrive collection. *Gerard Saylor is Director of the LD Fargo Library in Lake Mills, Wisconsin.
