WorldCat.org Now Available on Badgerlink
From Linda Bailen, lbailen@nwls.lib.wi.us

OCLC's WorldCat now appears on Badgerlink as a link under "General Resources." The WorldCat link can be used by patrons or library staff.

WorldCat (world catalog) will be useful when staff and patrons are unable to locate an item in Merlin (regional catalog) or WISCAT (state catalog), since the scope is international. The WorldCat link on the Badgerlink home page will take you to a simple keyword search box. Users can search the WorldCat database, and after performing a search they can click on a title to display a brief record containing bibliographic information as well as the ISBN and OCLC number. Please keep in mind that only those institutions that have unlimited subscriptions to FirstSearch WorldCat will show up in the list of institutions that own an item. NWLS holdings will not be up-to-date in the WorldCat database.

Each linked result in the result list leads to a "Find in a Library" page where users can enter geographic information such as a zip code or state and receive a list of nearby libraries that own the item. Users can also create their own WorldCat account and add book reviews, table-of-contents information and notes to many WorldCat items, helping to personalize their search experience.

From WorldCat.org, any Web user can easily download and install the free WorldCat search box to their personal Web page. Libraries inside and outside the OCLC cooperative are encouraged to add the box to their sites.

DPI Announces Intent to Negotiate for Resource Sharing Contract
From Channel Weekly, August 17, 2006

The Department of Public Instruction notified Auto-Graphics of its intent to negotiate the award of a contract for the Wisconsin Resource Sharing and Information Access project defined in RFP #PAF 0611 on Tuesday, August 15, 2006. The Department plans to negotiate for a hybrid union/virtual catalog containing Wisconsin library holdings and an interlibrary loan management system.

The RFP requested responses for Group A modules: union catalog, virtual catalog, and interlibrary loan system and Group B modules: cataloging and federated search portal. Four vendors responded to the RFP: Auto-Graphics, Inc., OCLC, SirsiDynix, and WebFeat. As a part of its final recommendations, the evaluation committee recommended making an award in Group A only.

Scores were assigned in three categories: Technical score (vendor's response) - 40%, evaluators' score -40%, and cost score - 20%. Auto-Graphics, Inc. received the most points for both the technical score and the evaluators' score.

Cost categories and calculations were applied as consistently as possible for all vendors. Five year costs used for evaluation purposes for Group A products stated in the RFP responses were as follows:

Auto-Graphics: $2,274,000 (server in CA) $2,076,700 (server in Madison)
OCLC: $23,427,497
SirsiDynix: $1,420,500

There will be a 5-10 day appeal process and the department will not be able to begin negotiations prior to that time.

Individuals wanting to view vendor responses, scoring and other specified information may request copies of such information under the public records law at $.10 per page from Sue Linton, DPI Finance Director, at 608-266-3320.

Reflection

"I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve (or save) the world and a desire to enjoy (or savor) the world. This makes it hard to plan the day."
