Libraries are Shirley’s second career; previously she worked for 20 years in information technology for a manufacturing company. She also served on the library board in Freeport, Illinois, while the community built a new library. Shirley received her MLIS from the University of Illinois in 2004. Outside her career, Shirley is active in her church, where she sings in the choir and teaches Sunday School. She has been a member of YMCA and Altrusa, which promotes literacy.
