From Linda Bailen, NWLS
AskAway, a statewide cooperative service of Wisconsin libraries is available again in 2007 to residents of Northern Waters Library Service. Go ahead and ask a question! AskAway can help you get a reliable answer from a librarian anytime, day or night, right on the Internet. The Internet can sometimes be difficult to navigate, and librarians are more important than ever because of their skill at finding the information you really need. AskAway is an online service that opens the vast resources of libraries all over the country.
Sometimes the information you need is only available in a library resource, but through AskAway, experienced librarians help locate and evaluate the information you are seeking. You can get answers quickly and also learn how to answer your own questions, both within and beyond traditional library hours. With AskAway you get help wherever you are, whenever you need it.
Libraries already provide many services that users can access from outside of the physical library building, including online library catalogs, full-text of magazines, newspapers, books and other online resources. AskAway is just another way of expanding the services that libraries already provide.
You can connect to live chat by using the “Connect to AskAway” button or fill out the email request form. Email questions will be handled during library hours 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. PAGE UP
Tech Tips
Pick Up Your Email From Anywhere
From Tony Kriskovich, NWLS
This is a quick tip on checking POP3 & SMTP email on a public computer. Let’s start out by explaining the different types of emails. There are basically two kinds of email services: web-based and domain. Hotmail and Yahoo are known as web-based email accounts. These kinds of email accounts can be checked from any computer with an Internet connection.
Domain email accounts are usually set up for organizations to email each other. Setting up a mail server is very common with businesses and Internet Service Providers (ISPs). ISPs usually give users a free email address if they have Internet access through them (Example: bob@centurytel.net).
Domain email needs to be set up on a local computer to be checked. In some cases, the provider will also set up web page for users to access their account (Example: NWLS has http://nwls.lib.wi.us/webmail ). Not all places offer this, and that becomes a problem: when patrons try to check their business or home email on a public access computer, they need to know all of their hard-to-remember domain settings.
To solve this problem, http://mail2web.com/ has come up with a free service that enables anyone to check domain email accounts from anywhere in the world. All they need to know is their email address and password with no need to sign up. It also uses a secure standard connection. For more security, it offers a Secure Login connection that enables 128-bit security, which uses a stronger encryption.
