Introducing Cela McGinnis
From Jim Trojanowski, jtrojanowski@nwls.lib.wi.us
Cela McGinnis is the new Director of Winchester Public Library, replacing Barbara Bull, who retired in June. Cela earned her BA in Anthropology from Beloit College and her MLS from the University of Wisconsin- Madison. She brings a wealth of experience to Winchester, having worked in school libraries in Watersmeet, Michigan, Warren, Illinois, Grafton, Wisconsin, and South Shore School District in Bayfield County, Wisconsin, as a medical librarian at Abbott-Northwestern and Children's Hospitals in Minneapolis, and as a cataloger for South Central Library System in Madison.
Away from work, Cela enjoys fishing, bicycling, skiing, acting in community theatre, knitting, and reading. Those activities are currently on hold, however, as she moves her home from Herbster to Manitowish Waters.
Cela spent her high school years saying she would never be a teacher or a librarian. A few years of experience at the Science Library at Beloit College and as a student aide at Lakeland High School soon changed her mind. As a result, Cela has adopted "Never say never" as her personal slogan.
Welcome, Cela. We look forward to working with you.

Northwoods Conference of Library Friends and Supporters
From James D. Backus, Friends of Marathon County Public Library, Wisconsin Valley Library Service
We are extending a personal invitation to you to attend this year's edition of the Northwoods Conference of Library Friends and Supporters. The September 30th Conference will focus on a wide variety of issues relating to book sales. We are assembling a group of experienced discussion leaders from library groups all over the northern part of our state who will guide us in the exchange of ideas relating to activities before, during, and after the sale. We realize that there is no one correct answer to any of the questions we will be exploring, but we hope to gather a collection of "Best Practice" approaches to each of the issues we'll be discussing.
A healthy bag lunch is included in the $10 registration fee, as well as snacks furnished by the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board and baked goods supplied by members of the Marathon County Friends. Door prizes, silent auction treasures, and educational materials relating to Friends activities will be available. Discounts have been negotiated with some local motels, if you choose to spend the night.
A flyer outlining further details on the Conference with a registration form is listed on the WVLS website. We sincerely hope that you and members of your group can attend and share your expertise with the other attendees.

First-Aid Guide
Medical emergencies don't occur every day. But when they do, you should have the information you need to deal with these situations. This site by Mayo Clinic provides first-aid information from Animal Bites through Toothache.
Noise-Induced Hearing Loss
Every day we experience sound in our environment such as the television, radio, washing machine, automobiles, buses, and trucks. But when an individual is exposed to harmful sounds--sounds that are too loud or loud sounds over a long time--sensitive structures of the inner ear can be damaged, causing noise-induced hearing loss.

Reflection
"Some national parks have long waiting lists for camping reservations. When you have to wait a year to sleep next to a tree, something is wrong."
