Engaging Youth on their Own Terms: Instant Messaging and Gaming in Libraries
Attempting to mold young library users into miniature librarians is an unfair and often futile goal. To meet their needs and ensure our institutions are supported in the future, we must listen to them!
Attend online on Tuesday, October 10, at 10:00 a.m. as the SirsiDynix Institute presents Aaron Schmidt and Sarah Houghton speaking on ways to serve teens on their own turf. Learn to create a teen friendly environment in your library by providing the resources and services teens want, when and where they want them. Other topics discussed will be MySpace, iPods, and weblogs.
Technology Training for Patrons
If your library has computers available for the public, then there’s no doubt that library staff spends time helping patrons learn to use those computers. Whether the technology training you do (or want to do) is one-to-one, on-the-fly, or a more formal program, this session will have tips and suggestions for improving the effectiveness of the training you provide.
This WebJunction webinar will be held on Tuesday, October 31 at 10:30 a.m. and will be moderated by Brenda Hough, Technology Coordinator, Northeast Kansas Library System.

WISCAT ILL for 2007
From Linda Bailen, lbailen@nwls.lib.wi.us
The Department of Public Instruction (DPI) has contracted with Auto-Graphics, Inc. of Pomona, California to provide the new WISCAT, which is a hybrid union/virtual catalog containing Wisconsin library holdings AND an interlibrary loan management system. We will use the same software to create and manage requests, and will no longer use Fretwell-Downing's VDX software for managing requests. A detailed list of the new functionality may be viewed in PDF format. For more information about the new WISCAT ILL, see the August 31 article in Channel Weekly.
Some of the features many of you will appreciate are:
- The ability to create one request and choose a number of copies when ordering multiple copies for a book discussion group.
- There will no longer be 2 different request numbers. The request number will be the same for the borrower and lender.
- Canceling a request will be a one step process, and we will no longer need to clear the "rota" before submitting a cancel.
NWLS has received the WISCAT order form and will submit the order on behalf of member libraries that are currently using WISCAT ILL. Member libraries will not need to submit a separate order form, and any member libraries that currently do not use WISCAT ILL but would like to sign up, please contact NWLS.
Reference and Loan Library has scheduled a training session at NWLS on Monday, November 20. Workshop registration information will be sent to all NWLS libraries. Other training opportunities will be announced on both WISCAT listservs and posted on the WISCAT support/training web page.
